What to Wear for an Autumn Run in Sweden

You look outside, add another layer, and then spend the first part of your run wondering where to put it. Swedish autumn can turn getting dressed into the longest part of the workout.

Start with the run you actually have planned. A steady half-hour, a faster session and a walk with several stops can feel very different in the same weather. These are starting points to adjust, rather than a uniform for every runner.

Give each layer a job

Base layer: the layer next to your skin. Look for comfortable seams, enough freedom to move and a fabric intended to manage moisture. A synthetic running top or suitable merino blend can be a useful starting point. An everyday cotton T-shirt has a different job and can stay damp after a sweaty run.

Mid-layer: adjustable warmth. Choose a light mid-layer when you want a little insulation, or a warmer one when the conditions and your pace call for it. You do not automatically need both. A zip makes it easier to release heat without stopping to change.

Outer layer: protection from the weather. Wind resistance and waterproofness are different properties. A thin wind layer is not automatically a rain jacket.

Choose for the weather you have

Conditions A starting combination What to adjust
Cool, dry and windy Base layer with a light wind layer Add a light mid-layer if your pace is gentle or you feel cold.
Colder and dry, around 0°C to −5°C Base layer with a suitable mid-layer; wind protection if needed Choose the warmth for your pace, wind exposure and time outside. Add gloves and ear coverage as needed.
Rain or wet snow Base layer, warmth as needed, and an appropriate waterproof outer layer Check the whole garment's rain protection, seams and ventilation; shorten or change the session when conditions are unsuitable.

Make the first ten minutes useful

Choose a short loop close to home when testing an outfit. Notice whether your back feels clammy, your arms are comfortable and you can move freely. Change one layer next time instead of buying a whole new outfit. Before leaving, check the forecast, visibility and footing; wet leaves and ice deserve attention too.

A dry top for the trip home can be more useful than an extra thick layer during a hard run. If pain changes how you move, reduce the session and arrange an assessment rather than trying to solve it with warmer clothes.

What I am looking for for Dashable

I am exploring a practical mid-layer and a packable anorak with the orange Dashable embroidery. The fit, decoration and weather claims need checking before anything joins the shop. The existing Dashable hoodies are everyday pieces for before and after activity; I am not presenting them as waterproof running equipment.

Explore Dashable everyday clothing or talk with me about training. Questions about the running range? Email hello@dashable.me.

More from Dashable: build an adjustable running outfit and understand rain jackets and GORE-TEX.
