Three Ways to Build an Everyday Outfit Around a T-Shirt

A T-shirt can be the most useful starting point in an outfit: one familiar piece, then a few choices about what goes with it. Before buying anything new, try these three combinations with the clothes you already own.

1. A simple base and one colour

Start with a T-shirt and your favourite everyday trousers. Add one item in a colour you enjoy: a hoodie, a bag or a jacket. Keeping the other pieces simple gives that colour room without requiring everything to match.

Try the combination in daylight. Colours can look different on a screen or under indoor lighting, and the final choice is about what you enjoy wearing together.

2. A relaxed top and a considered hemline

With a roomy T-shirt, look at where the hem falls against the waistband and pockets of your trousers. Wear it loose, or try a small front tuck if the fabric and length make that comfortable. A small change can help you decide whether you like the proportions.

You do not need to make every piece fitted to create an outfit you like. Try moving, sitting and reaching in it. The combination should work for the day you plan to have.

3. An extra layer for the journey

Put a hoodie or jacket beside your T-shirt before leaving home, and consider whether you will want that extra layer later. Check the actual weather forecast and your plans rather than assuming one outfit will suit every part of the day.

If you are going to a training session, pack a clean T-shirt for afterwards. Choose clothing for the workout separately according to the activity; everyday styling does not determine whether a garment is suitable for exercise.

Choose the next piece with your wardrobe in mind

Before ordering a new T-shirt, think of two combinations you would wear immediately. Check its fabric, measurements and care information, and compare them with a top you already like. That gives the purchase a clear place in your wardrobe.
