Your First Chiropractic Visit: You Can Start with Questions

You have been meaning to book, but the questions keep getting in the way. Is this the right kind of appointment? How do I explain something that comes and goes? Do I have to agree to treatment straight away?

A first visit is a chance to be heard, assessed and involved in deciding what happens next. You can arrive with questions. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis.

Begin with an ordinary moment

“Turning my head when I park is uncomfortable.” “My back bothers me at the end of a working day.” “I have stopped doing an exercise I enjoy.”

Your own everyday description is useful. Say when things changed, what makes them better or worse, and what you would like help getting back to.

What happens before a treatment decision?

An assessment usually includes a conversation about your symptoms, health history, medicines and activities, followed by an examination. You should be able to ask what is being checked and why. Sometimes the appropriate next step is another type of care or further investigation.

A booking is not agreement to every possible technique. Ask for an explanation of the options, expected benefits and risks before deciding. Tell the practitioner if you feel worried about a particular movement or treatment.

Five questions worth keeping on your phone

  • What have you found, and what is still uncertain?
  • Which options fit my situation, including other forms of care?
  • What are the possible benefits and risks?
  • What can I do between appointments, and what should make me seek help sooner?
  • How will we decide whether the plan is helping?

You do not have to remember a whole conversation perfectly. Ask for the main points again if you need them. A useful plan should make sense when you leave the room.

Make the practical side simple

Have a note of your medicines and relevant previous injuries or conditions. Check the price, appointment length and what to wear before the visit. Share detailed health information privately with your practitioner, rather than in a public comment.

Before you leave, try to answer three questions in your own words: what is the next step, what will I do at home, and when will we review it? If one is unclear, ask.
